Stop Buying Skincare: Things You Need to Know Before You Buy
________________________________________
As a 61-year-old woman – and lots of trial and error (and success) - I want to help you build a skincare routine that works for YOU – and I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be expensive or extensive. But you do need to know the right ingredients, products with the right ingredients and the right order. And you need to be consistent.
Let's talk about the essentials of building a skincare routine that works - key steps you need to know what to buy and why you’re buying it – so you can make informed decisions about your skincare purchases that will get you lasting results
The Skincare Marketing Trap
Before you add another serum, lotion, or potion to your cart, you need to know the secret that most people aren’t going to tell you. Most of us, especially those of us over 40, are buying more skincare products than we need expecting to see transformational results.
It’s no wonder the global skincare industry is massive, with revenue projections reaching over $180 billion by 2024 and $210 billion by 2028. And guess what? 75% of that market is women aged 40 and older—just like us— seeking solutions to wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging.
New products are launched every day, and influencers and ads make it seem like you need all of them to see results. But without knowing the basics of skincare – without starting with those basics —you’re setting yourself up for frustration, wasted money and lots of bottles and vials of products and lackluster results.
Skincare companies are experts at selling us the latest “must-have” serum or cream with promises of instant results. But here’s the truth: many of these products won’t do much for you unless you start with the basics. You don’t need to buy every new product that comes on the market.
If you’ve been watching my channel, you know I believe in the power of starting with the basics. I’ve tested a variety of products, including laser devices and high-end serums, but everything I do starts with the foundational steps: cleanse, moisturize, protect.

This is the most overlooked part of skincare – the Basics.
Now, let’s get into the basics—the essentials of a skincare routine that will actually work. It doesn’t have to be expensive or extensive but CONSISTENCY is key. Think of your skincare routine like brushing your teeth—something you do morning and night without fail.
The key ingredients to focus on are:
Cleanser: A gentle cleanser to prep your skin and remove impurities. I use The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, which works for all skin types and is very affordable. At night, I use an oil-based cleanser first to remove makeup.
Toner & Essence: While not essential for everyone, I use them to balance my skin’s pH and prepare it to absorb the next steps. I alternate between Thayers Milky Toner and L'Occitane Immortelle Essential Water.
Vitamins A, B, and C:
Vitamin A (Retinoids): I use Maelove’s Moonlight Retinal Serum to help with anti-aging, fine lines, and even skin tone.
Vitamin B (Niacinamide): This calms irritation and strengthens the skin barrier. I love DRMTLGY’s Needleless Serum.
Vitamin C: Maelove’s Glow Maker Serum brightens my skin and boosts collagen production.
Moisturizer: I use Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizer to lock in hydration and support my skin barrier.
Sunscreen: This is non-negotiable. I use DRMTLGY’s Universal Tinted Sunscreen SPF 46. It’s perfect under makeup and doesn’t pill.
This routine has worked wonders for me, and I’m confident it can work for you too
Stop Wasting Money and Start Seeing Results
So what’s the problem with buying products BEFORE you have the basics?
I think it’s a lot like making decisions without knowledge. Without understanding what your skin truly needs or how products work together, you’re left guessing. When you’re guessing, it’s easy to fall for marketing traps or spend money on products that don’t deliver results because they aren’t being used in the right way, at the right time.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Knowing and using the right products is a strong foundation that will make all the difference in the look and feel of your skin.
You WILL see results. And then ~ adding products into your regimen can complement, supplement or amplify your routine.
So If you’re using lots skincare products but you’re not using the basics in a daily morning and evening routine, I encourage you to rethink your regimen.
I encourage you to watch THIS VIDEO featuring Alexa Saarenoja, age 45 and perimenopausal. She was experiencing the 'all too familiar' confidence drop when looking in the mirror - feeling like she was losing herself to her aging skin . . . This is her live reaction (I just had to share it).
Once I oriented her to the products she needed for her morning and evening routine, she saw results in JUST ONE WEEK. It's an emotional video – she shares how much her confidence transformed and how simple it was – she just needed to know the basics.
Always evolving with you, Anne
