Three Mindset Shifts for Successful Weight Loss

However, regardless of the diet you choose, changing your mindset on these three key areas will help you succeed. Let's dive in!

1. Setting Boundaries on Your Diet: For a long time, I would say, “I’ll do a diet, but I’m not going to stop drinking.” Although I didn’t drink a lot, I drank every day—whether it was a glass of wine with cocktail peanuts after work or a daiquiri on the weekend while doing chores. These small indulgences added up, and I justified them by thinking I deserved them after a long day. This mindset limited my ability to succeed. Once I realized the toll it was taking on my health, I decided to draw a line in the sand. I had to stop these habits because they were controlling me. By acknowledging my bad relationship with alcohol and food, I took the first step toward real change.

2. Overcoming the Fear of Starvation: I used to think, “I’m going to starve; I won’t be able to do this.” But the truth is, you won’t starve. This fear is often a creation of our habits and mindset. I had developed a habit of constantly snacking throughout the day. Jared Moran, the mentor of the Body Slims program, uses the analogy of prisoners who get by with three meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You don’t need more than three meals a day if those meals are nutritionally dense. The key is to stop telling yourself you’re going to starve and recognize that this is just a limiting belief.

3. Embracing the Challenge: Yes, losing weight is hard, but at what point do you give up on yourself? Life is full of challenges, and you’ve overcome many of them already. This is no different. The constant cycle of dieting and gaining weight back was harder than committing to a structured program for 70 days. It’s about changing the underlying habits and mindsets. Once you work through these, real and lasting change is possible.

Reflecting on Your Journey

Looking back on my 50s, I realize that these small, seemingly insignificant habits added up over time. Gaining a few ounces here and there eventually led to significant weight gain. These three mindset shifts are crucial if you’re ready to lose weight. I challenge you to journal about what might be holding you back. Consider these prompts:

  • Limiting Beliefs: What have I told myself I will or won’t do? Are these boundaries preventing me from succeeding?

  • Relationship with Food: What is my relationship with food like? How often am I eating, and what am I eating? Track this for a week to gain insight.

By lifting these boundaries and addressing these mindsets, you can transform your body, lose weight, and achieve a leaner physique. Trust the process, and give yourself the chance to succeed. You can do this!
